KATES PROJECT TRUST PATTAYA THAILAND

Work

Many of the poor families living in Pattaya have travelled from all over Thailand in the hope of making a better life. They see Bangkok and Pattaya as places where there are many rich tourists and where they in turn will be able to make big money.
Many do not even have proper registration papers and find they cannot work or live there legally.SLUM HOMES ARE BUILT FROM CORRUGATED IRON AND SCRAP BITS AND PIECES

Crime and prostitution end up as the only ‘careers' open to them and so the cycle continues with young girls becoming pregnant and being left to provide for their children in whatever way they can.

Kate’s Project Trust was established in 2006 and in that time has assisted many families from the many slum areas around Pattaya. Most of the temporary shacks in the slums have no walls and are made of scrap tin and wood. They tend to be built over or near stagnant water and the children play unwittingly in this unhealthy environment daily. There are no proper sanitary provisions and sickness and infected sores are the norm.

Sending the children to local schools is an absolute priority for
Kate’s Project
.
At present 150 children are assisted with school fees, lunches and uniforms Many of the families living in the slums just simply cannot afford the school fees and it is the goalof the project to offer even more places in 2010.

Many of the people living in theslums have a great range of skills and trades which are not being fully utilized.MANY HOMES ARE BUILT ON STILTS ABOVE STAGNANT AND STINKING WATER
The slums of Pattaya have sprung up in a haphazard fashion with the inhabitants coming from all corners of Thailand with different cultural backgrounds and histories and this in itself leads to a great
“melting –pot” of talents. It is the aim of Kate’s Project to tap into these resources and allow the people to harness their full potential.

It is not unusual to see the children in the slums making little bags and toys. With the help of the Trust some of these items can be sold at local markets and also to the tourists visiting the city.By developing skills and crafts, alternatives can be reached instead of begging on the streets.
